What You Need To Know About AHAs

exfoliators, exfoliating ingredients, benefits of exfoliating

The superstar multi-tasker providing next-level exfoliation to transform dull, tired skin to a noticeably brighter, smoother complexion.

Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids (AHAs) are a group of naturally occurring plant compounds commonly found in some of your favourite skincare products (hint: Ultra Brightening Serum). There are many types, including lactic, malic, citric, glycolic, tartaric and mandelic acids. Whilst most of these acids can be found naturally occurring in fruits, cosmetic products tend to use nature-identical versions of these acids.

All are key to refining coarse skin texture; acting as exfoliants to weaken the bond between skin cells, allowing debris and dead cells to be lifted away.

How do AHAs benefit the skin?

If you’ve done your homework, you’d know that exfoliating is essential for healthy, happy, glowing skin. AHAs work to exfoliate your skin at the surface level, sloughing off the uneven texture and excess dirt that may clog your pores and dull your complexion. By removing dead cells, AHAs allow for new skin cell turnover, which over time (if used consistently and correctly) will leave you with a silky smooth, plump and more radiant appearance.

Aside from exfoliation, AHAs like lactic acid, glycolic acid, and malic acid are also humectants (we did say they were multi-taskers). Humectants draw water to the skin, allowing the deeper layers of the skin to infuse the top layers with moisture. This works wonders in providing lasting hydration to comfort dry skin and support a healthy skin barrier.

Remember to always apply SPF 50+ during the day - you should always, but especially when using AHAs.
